228716 is a genuine replacement Hypertherm plasma cutter, brass torch head used on the Hypertherm powermax 45XP, Powermax 65, 85 and 105 plasma cutters when used with a mechanised plasma cutting torch.

Unfortunately over time the torch head can become damaged due to constant heat and molten splashback, the occasional torch crash or torch head threads becoming worn which leads to Error 0-50 as the back cap can no longer hold the spring loaded plunger that closes the microswitch within the torch body. When changing 228716 we advise changing the torch mounting sleeve 228735 at the same time, the mounting sleeve can become brittle over time and is easily damaged when replacing the torch head. The options are either a new Hypertherm duramax mechanised cutting torch which can be found here on our website or replace the torch head of which the instructions are below.

1 Turn off the system power, remove consumables, Remove the torch from the torch mount, some brands of plasma cutting table may need the torch to be replaced at exactly the same height so make a mark on the torch body so it can be refitted in the correct place.

2 Once the torch is removed, unscrew the strain relief body from the positioning sleeve 228737 and slide this along the torch lead. Mini torches have no positioning sleeve so remove from coupler.

3 Unscrew the torch adapter/coupler 228736 from the mounting sleeve 228735 and slide the this along the torch lead.

4 The torch body 228716 is connected to the mounting sleeve 228735 by 3 screws located at the consumables end, using a #1 Philips screwdriver remove the screws and slide the mounting sleeve off.

5 Disconnect the quick connector that connects the microswitch leads to the microswitch, remove the screw that holds the microswitch to the torch body using a #1 Philips screwdriver and remove the microswitch, place switch and screw to one side.

6 Remove the screw that secures the torch’s pilot arc wire to the torch body using a #1 Phillips screwdriver.

7 Loosen the nut that secures the gas supply line to the torch body using the 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch wrenches together (or two adjustable wrenches). Discard the torch body.

Install the new torch body

1. Tighten the nut that secures the gas supply line to the torch body using the 1/4-inch and 3/8-inch wrenches together (or two adjustable wrenches).

2. Tighten the screw that secures the torch’s pilot wire to the torch body to 5.76 kg cm (5 in-lbs) using a #1 Phillips screwdriver.

3. Install the cap sensor switch using a #1 Phillips screwdriver to tighten the mounting screw to 9.22 kg cm (8 in-lbs).

4. Connect the wire connector for the cap sensor switch.

5. Slide the mounting sleeve over the front of the torch body, aligning the slot in the mounting sleeve with the cap sensor plunger.

6. Tighten the three mounting sleeve screws to 11.52 kg cm (10 in-lbs) using a #1 Phillips screwdriver.

7. Thread the coupler (Mini-machine torch) or coupler and positioning sleeve (Full-length machine torch) into the mounting sleeve until hand tight.

8. If applicable, thread the strain relief nut into the coupler (Mini-machine torch) or positioning sleeve (Full-length machine torch) until hand tight.

9. If applicable, thread the strain relief body onto the strain relief nut until hand tight.

10. Replace the consumables and reconnect the torch lead to the power supply.
