This new range of machines combines the advantages of a permanent magnet (100 % safe), new TML technology and a rugged but smooth boring unit. The engineers at Alfa in Germany have designed a new type of permanent magnet that applies more force closer to the base of the magnet enabling the machine to adhere and drill steel thinner than has been achievable in the past, indeed we have included a video showing the Alfa 35SP drilling vertically through a cabinet built of 1mm powder coated steel. Other brands of drilling machine need a minimum of 6 or indeed 8mm thick steel for the electromagnet to apply enough force to successfully broach ferrous metals. Most other brands of magnetic drill also use an electro magnet to apply the clamping force, however if the power fails for whatever reason, the clamping force is lost which can end in catastrophic results particularly when drilling vertically or on the underside of steel. The Alfra 35SP magnet is engaged using a lever which is automatically locked in position until unlocked by the operator. Indeed the magnet base has a very small amount of permanent magnetic adhesion once the magnet is switched off, this takes some of the weight away from the operator allowing them to line the machine up in the desired drilling position.
